Abstract

Data protection is a key topics for many organizations and yet many of them often struggle to deploy a comprehensive strategy to protect their assets. In that talk we will get a holistic view of what it means when deploying information system on AWS. We will cover all the relevant area from compliance to European Regulation and data localization to memory encryption and confidential computing. By lowering the entry bar, we will understand how AWS is changing the game when it comes down to information security and how key security concepts like “security by design” and “0-trust” or “self-healing” system are now a reality in the cloud.

Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS)

Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS) is a subsidiary of Amazon that provides on-demand cloud computing platforms and APIs to individuals, companies, and governments, on a metered pay-as-you-go basis. These cloud computing web services provide distributed computing processing capacity and software tools via AWS server farms. One of these services is Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), which allows users to have at their disposal a virtual cluster of computers, available all the time, through the Internet. AWS’s virtual computers emulate most of the attributes of a real computer, including hardware central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs) for processing; local/RAM memory; hard-disk/SSD storage; a choice of operating systems; networking; and pre-loaded application software such as web servers, databases, and customer relationship management (CRM).

AWS services are delivered to customers via a network of AWS server farms located throughout the world. Fees are based on a combination of usage (known as a “Pay-as-you-go” model), hardware, operating system, software, or networking features chosen by the subscriber required availability, redundancy, security, and service options. Subscribers can pay for a single virtual AWS computer, a dedicated physical computer, or clusters of either. Amazon provides select portions of security for subscribers (e.g. physical security of the data centers) while other aspects of security are the responsibility of the subscriber (e.g. account management, vulnerability scanning, patching). AWS operates from many global geographical regions including seven in North America.

Amazon markets AWS to subscribers as a way of obtaining large-scale computing capacity more quickly and cheaply than building an actual physical server farm.All services are billed based on usage, but each service measures usage in varying ways. As of 2021 Q4, AWS has 33% market share for cloud infrastructure while the next two competitors Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud have 21%, and 10% respectively, according to Synergy Group.

What is GreenHack~IT?

A hackathon on Green AI for Industry 4.0

Application of Artificial Intelligence on Industrial problems under a Green IT perspective

Using of AI to optimise existing processes in order to make them more sustainable or green.

The hackathon will take place at the Munich Data Science Institute at the TUM campus in Garching.

We will gather 30 students from Institut Mines Télécom (IMT) in France and 30 students from Technical University of Munich (TUM) to form 10 French-German teams of 6 students to tackle the industrial challenge which will be provided by ArianeGroup.

The students will work 3 days and nights to solve the challenge and the best teams will be elected by a jury consisting of academics, industrial experts from Ariane Group, as well as members from the German-French Academy for the Industry of the Future.

This year’s hackathon will take place on December 8-11, 2022

What is a hackathon in machine learning?

A machine learning or a data science hackathon is an event that runs for a consecutive period of time (nights or week-ends), where people get together and work non-stop on data-related projects for practice, recognition, networking and for having fun. Data science hackathons can be challenging to crack for beginners. However, one need not be an expert in the field to participate in one. In fact, competitions or hackathons are a great way to master one’s skills, add badges to one’s resume, find solutions to difficult problems and ultimately, find his/her future job in a fun way.

It is about: collaboration, experimentation, agility and serendipity.

Abstract

Ever wondered what’s behind that language on “technology transfer” in research proposals? Well, that’s one of our key activities at SIDN Labs. We’re a research team that aims to increase the operational security and resilience of the Internet infrastructure by bridging the worlds of academia and operations, specifically in the space of large-scale Internet measurements and technology development. We very often work with academic institutions (e.g., the University of Twente, the University of Southern California, and Delft University of Technology) and other research labs (e.g., NLnet Labs) and we use the results of these joint cybersecurity projects to further improve the services of SIDN, the not-for-profit operator of the Netherlands’ national top-level domain on the Internet, .nl. We also publish these results so that everyone in the Internet community can use them as well. In this talk, I’ll discuss a few example research projects and how we used their output for SIDN’s services.

Cristian Hesselman directs SIDN Labs, the research arm of the operator of .nl top-level domain, SIDN. His work focuses on advancing the security of the Internet to support our digital society. He is also a part-time professor at the University of Twente, a researcher at the Twente University Centre for Cybersecurity Research (TUCCR), and he chairs the board of directors of NLnet Labs. Abstract

Today’s Internet cannot do without confidentiality and online identification. The cryptography typically used to achieve this, however, is under threat from quantum computers. While a practical quantum computer is years away, it also takes years to standardise and deploy alternative cryptography. Worse, applications that store data long‐term (e.g., captured encrypted Internet traffic) require action now, since if current cryptography is broken, stored data is immediately compromised.

Cryptographers are developing post‐quantum cryptography (PQC) that is secure against attacks with quantum computers. While much progress has been made developing and trialling algorithms, we lack a complete view of the problem space. More boldly: we cannot answer the question “what if the whole Internet had to switch to PQC?”. Nobody “owns the Internet” so who will tackle this challenge? Sure, the tech giants should take action, but the Internet is much broader than that. In my view, this challenge can only be solved with an independent holistic approach that considers all aspects of the Internet.

In this talk I will explore the research challenges for quantum-proofing the whole Internet and will propose a research agenda to tackle these challenges. I will show how we need to examine all parts of the Internet that rely on public-key cryptography and how we need to decide if we can simply replace algorithms, if we maybe have to re-engineer protocols and applications, or if the costs are simply too high and we should retire protocols or applications.

Roland van Rijswijk-Deij

After two decades in the industry, working on applied cryptography and network security, Roland is professor of measurement-based Internet security at the University of Twente since 2021. His research interests are in the application of global-scale Internet measurements to support empirically-backed securityanalysis and improvements of Internet protocols and the transition of the Internet to post-quantum cryptography.

Roland is a member of the Design and Analysis of Communications Systems group at the University of Twente, and a researcher in the Twente University Centre for Cybersecurity Research (TUCCR). Abstract

My talk will be about the paradigm shift from security to resilience, and especially the ways, the steps, the obstacles, chances, and risks. What to do to get a cyber resilient system?
Cybersecurity is necessary to think in another way; and certainly in terms of cyber resilience. Since we cannot build 100% secure systems, the question is, how we can build robust systems where the overall functionality is provided – also in case some parts are failing.

Prof. Dreo studied computer science at the University of Maribor, Slovenia and received her doctorate and habilitation at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich (LMU) with “summa cum laude”.
In 1997, she received the LMU’s doctoral sponsorship award.
2016 she was awarded the Europe Medal by the Minister of State Dr. Merk
In 2019, she was selected as one of the 50 most influential women in Europe in the field of cybersecurity
In 2020, she was awarded the silver medal of the city of Neubiberg, Germany

Her research focuses, among others, on detection and mitigation of cyber attacks, in particular so-called Advanced Persistent Threats, development of novel cyber defense approaches in the environment of network-based moving target defense, use of ML-based approaches in security event analysis, 5G and IoT, situational awareness and social analytics, software defined networks and quantum communication.
